چکیده

We consider the problem of identifying unknown inclusions inside an elastic body by means of traction–displacement relations measured on the boundary. Based on the asymptotic formula of Ammari et al (2003 J. Elast. at press), we propose an algorithm to reconstruct unknown inclusions. The algorithm of this paper detects the location and the elastic moment tensors (elastic Pólya–Szegö tensors) of the inclusion. Since the elastic moment tensors carry information on the size of the inclusion, we can represent the inclusion in two dimensions by a disc of the detected size with the detected centre. We also propose an algorithm to find an ellipse which represents the elastic moment tensors. For this purpose, we explicitly compute elastic moment tensors associated with ellipses. Several results of numerical experiments are presented. We emphasize that only shear stresses are used for the reconstruction of the inclusion: linear traction to detect elastic moment tensors and quadratic polynomials to detect the location.

Numerical reconstruction of a cluster of small elastic inclusions

We consider a problem of reconstructing a cluster of small elastic inclusions which are located close to each other. We show that the location of the cluster and the elastic moment tensor associated with it can be reconstructed by the measurements of the displacement vectors on the boundary corresponding to the traction applied on the boundary. The detected elastic moment tensor represents the ...

Small Volume Asymptotics for Anisotropic Elastic Inclusions

We derive asymptotic expansions for the displacement at the boundary of a smooth, elastic body in the presence of small inhomogeneities. Both the body and the inclusions are allowed to be anisotropic. This work extends prior work of Capdeboscq and Vogelius (Math. Modeling Num. Anal. 37, 2003) for the conductivity case. In particular, we obtain an asymptotic expansion of the difference between t...

Reconstruction of Elastic Inclusions of Small Volume via Dynamic Measurements

We consider the inverse problem of identifying locations and certain properties of the shapes of small elastic inclusions in a homogeneous background medium from dynamic boundary measurements for a finite interval in time. Using as weights particular background solutions, we present an asymptotic method based on appropriate averaging of the dynamic boundary measurements and propose non-iterativ...

Thermodynamic stability in elastic systems: Hard spheres embedded in a finite spherical elastic solid.

We determined the total system elastic Helmholtz free energy, under the constraints of constant temperature and volume, for systems comprised of one or more perfectly bonded hard spherical inclusions (i.e. "hard spheres") embedded in a finite spherical elastic solid. Dirichlet boundary conditions were applied both at the surface(s) of the hard spheres, and at the outer surface of the elastic so...

Elastic-Plastic Analysis of Bending Moment – Axial Force Interaction in Metallic Beam of T-Section

This study derives kinematic admissible bending moment – axial force (M-P) interaction relations for mild steel by considering elastic-plastic idealizations. The interaction relations can predict strains, which is not possible in a rigid perfectly plastic idealization. The relations are obtained for all possible cases pertaining to the locations of neutral axis. One commercial rolled steel T-se...
